Karwa Chauth 2026: Date, Moonrise Time and Vedic Puja Guide for Every City
By Astro Sandeep, Vedic astrologer and Lal Kitab expert with 21+ years of experience
Key points at a glance
- Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October 2026 in India, on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi.
- In Chandigarh, the Moon rises at 8:12 PM IST and the puja muhurat runs from 5:38 PM to 6:55 PM, as per Drik Panchang.
- The Chaturthi tithi runs from 1:06 AM to 10:09 PM IST on 29 October 2026.
- In Canada and the USA, the fast is kept one day earlier, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, as per local panchang.
- Australia and New Zealand keep the vrat on Thursday, 29 October, but the Moon rises late there (around 11:47 PM in Auckland).
Every October my phone starts ringing with the same question. A mother in Ludhiana asks, "Beta, Karwa Chauth is on the 29th, but my daughter is in Brampton. When does she keep her fast?" A newly married girl in Mohali wants to know if her first vrat should wait because of a Mangal dosh someone mentioned at the roka. A husband in Melbourne simply wants to know what time the Moon will show up.
This guide answers all of that for Karwa Chauth 2026. You get verified dates, city-wise moonrise, a step-by-step vrat method, and what your own kundli analysis can actually tell you about married life. In my 21 years of practice, I have seen that a calm, well-timed fast means far more to a family than a fearful one.
What is Karwa Chauth 2026?
Karwa Chauth 2026 is the one-day fast that married Hindu women, and many engaged women, keep on Thursday, 29 October 2026, for the long life and well-being of their husband. The fast runs from sunrise to moonrise on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. It ends after the woman offers arghya (water offering) to the Moon and sees her husband through a sieve.
"Karwa" is a small clay pot with a spout, and "chauth" is the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the waning Moon.
Karwa Chauth 2026 date, tithi and moonrise time by city
In India, the festival is on Thursday, 29 October, and in North America it falls on Wednesday, 28 October, because the Chaturthi tithi begins there on the previous local day.
The festival follows the tithi, not the calendar date. That is why families in Brampton fast a day before their parents in Jalandhar. Nothing is wrong.
| City | Fast date | Puja muhurat (local time) | Moonrise (local time) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh / Mohali / Panchkula | Thu, 29 Oct 2026 | 5:38 PM to 6:55 PM | 8:12 PM |
| Amritsar | Thu, 29 Oct 2026 | Check local panchang | 8:12 PM |
| Toronto / Brampton | Wed, 28 Oct 2026 | 6:14 PM to 7:35 PM | 7:45 PM |
| New York | Wed, 28 Oct 2026 | Check local panchang | 7:35 PM |
| Chicago | Wed, 28 Oct 2026 | Check local panchang | 7:27 PM |
| San Francisco | Wed, 28 Oct 2026 | Check local panchang | 8:08 PM |
| Houston | Wed, 28 Oct 2026 | 6:38 PM to 7:55 PM | 8:41 PM |
| Auckland | Thu, 29 Oct 2026 | 7:50 PM to 8:53 PM | 11:47 PM |

For Chandigarh, the fasting window runs from 6:35 AM to 8:12 PM, a little over 13.5 hours. For any town not in this table, check the free daily panchang for your location. Clouds can hide the Moon even after it has risen. In that case, families traditionally complete the puja at the calculated moonrise time.
How to keep the Karwa Chauth vrat: step-by-step method
The vrat has six simple steps, from sargi before dawn to breaking the fast after the Moon's arghya.
- Sargi before sunrise. The mother-in-law traditionally gives sargi (a pre-dawn meal): fruits, dry fruits, mathri, pheniyan or kheer, and something to drink. In Chandigarh, finish it before 6:35 AM.
- Sankalp. After bathing, sit facing east and take the sankalp (a mental promise) for the fast.
- Daytime fast. Most women keep a nirjala vrat (without water).
- Evening puja in the muhurat. Set up an image of Gauri Mata (Parvati) with Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Place the karwa filled with water, a diya, roli, rice and sweets. Listen to the vrat katha of Queen Veeravati with the other women and pass the thali around the circle.
- Arghya to the Moon. When the Moon rises, offer water from the karwa, look at the Moon through the sieve, then at your husband.
- Breaking the fast. Your husband offers you the first sip of water and the first bite of food.
A Lal Kitab note, separate from the Vedic method above: in Lal Kitab, the Moon's pakka ghar (permanent house) is the 4th house, linked to mother and the home. This is why the sargi from the mother-in-law and her blessings carry so much weight in the tradition.

Why the Moon matters: the Vedic astrology behind Karwa Chauth
In Vedic astrology, the Moon (Chandra) is the karaka (significator) of the mind, emotions and mother, so a fast that ends with the Moon is a prayer for emotional steadiness in a marriage.
Chaturthi is also Lord Ganesha's tithi. He removes obstacles, so the evening puja starts with him before Gauri Mata. Karwa Chauth comes four days after Sharad Purnima, so the waning Moon is still large and bright when it rises.
There is a second layer most websites skip. Every year, Karwa Chauth falls while the Sun is in sidereal Libra (Tula), where it is debilitated. I explain this period in detail in my note on the Sun transit in Libra. Libra is the natural 7th sign of the zodiac, the sign of partnership. When the Sun, our ego, is weak in the partnership sign, it is a good season to soften. That reading is mine, drawn from classical sign meanings, not from the vrat katha.
Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra read marriage mainly from the 7th house, its lord, Venus (Shukra) and, in a woman's chart, Jupiter (Guru).
What your kundli can tell you before this Karwa Chauth
Your kundli shows tendencies in married life, such as delays, friction periods or strong supportive dashas, but it cannot decide your marriage for you.
When a couple sits with me before their first Karwa Chauth, I usually look at four things:
- The 7th house and its lord. Strong, combust, or sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th?
- Venus and Jupiter. Sign, house and aspects.
- Mangal dosh. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Many sites treat this as a disaster. I disagree. In my practice, many Manglik charts have cancellation factors, and couples where both partners are Manglik often do well together.
- The running dasha. A Rahu or Saturn mahadasha can bring testing periods. Watching the current Rahu–Ketu transit of 2026–2028 alongside your dasha gives a clearer picture.
One honest limitation. If your birth time is off by even 15 minutes, the ascendant and house lords can shift. If you are unsure of your time, say so. A good astrologer will rectify it or work with what is certain.
You can start with a free online kundli matching report to see your guna score. Guna milan alone has never been enough in my experience.

Safe Karwa Chauth remedies: Vedic and Lal Kitab
The safest remedies on Karwa Chauth are simple acts of devotion, and any gemstone, rudraksha or Lal Kitab upay (remedy) should be chosen only after a personal chart check.
These are traditional practices and acts of faith. They support your intention. They cannot guarantee any outcome.
Vedic remedies (Vedic system)
- Chant "Om Som Somaya Namah" 108 times after moonrise, holding the karwa.
- Offer arghya with water mixed with a little raw milk and white flowers.
- Light a ghee diya before Gauri Mata and pray for patience and good health in the family.
Lal Kitab remedies (Lal Kitab system)
- Touch the feet of your mother and mother-in-law and take their blessings. In Lal Kitab, the Moon is tied to the mother, and her goodwill is treated as the Moon's strength.
- Keep a small square of plain silver with you, a common Lal Kitab measure for a weak Moon, but only if your chart supports it.
- Give milk, rice or white sweets to someone in need, with respect. Never waste or throw food.
A health line I always draw
A nirjala fast is not for everyone. If you are pregnant, diabetic, on blood pressure medicine or recovering from illness, please speak to your doctor first. Tradition allows phalahar (fruits and milk) or water during the day for such women. Your health is not a test of devotion.

Karwa Chauth myths vs facts
Most fears around Karwa Chauth come from hearsay, not from the shastras.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Breaking the fast by mistake brings harm to the husband. | No classical text says this. The intention matters. Families simply complete the puja and continue the next year. |
| The fast must be nirjala, even when you are unwell. | Tradition allows phalahar for health reasons. Follow your doctor. |
| NRIs must follow the Indian date. | The tithi is local. Toronto and New York fast on 28 October 2026, a day before India. |
| A Manglik woman's fast "doesn't work". | Mangal dosh is a chart factor to study, not a bar on worship. Many Manglik charts have cancellations. |
| If clouds hide the Moon, the fast is spoiled. | Families traditionally complete the puja at the calculated moonrise time. |
An illustrative example: one Karwa Chauth, two countries
This example is illustrative, not a real client.
Picture a couple married in Panchkula in spring. The wife works in Surrey, British Columbia, while the husband waits in Mohali for his visa papers. Which day should she keep her first Karwa Chauth, and can they do the puja "together"?
Her fast follows the local tithi in Canada: Wednesday, 28 October 2026. His family's puja in Mohali is on Thursday, 29 October. No conflict. They join on a video call when she offers arghya.
On the chart side, suppose his 7th lord sits in the 12th house, a common placement for spouses living abroad. That placement explains distance. It does not predict a broken marriage, and it does not tell anyone when an immigration file will clear. That is a question for their immigration consultant.
Karwa Chauth for families in Chandigarh tricity and NRI homes abroad
Families in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur and Kharar can meet me in person at my Mohali office, and NRI families get the same depth through online consultation.

My office is at Booth No. 50 (basement), Phase 1, Mohali. Around this festival I also see couples from Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala and Shimla, mostly for kundli milan.
For families in Canada (Brampton, Surrey, Toronto), the USA, Australia and New Zealand, online sessions work just as well. A birth in Toronto or Melbourne is recorded in local time, often with daylight saving, so I convert it to the correct time zone and coordinates before building the chart. You can read how sessions run on my page for astrology consultation for clients worldwide. I consult in Hindi, English and Punjabi.
Karwa Chauth comes a few days after Sharad Purnima. If your family also keeps kheer under the full moon, see my Sharad Purnima 2026 date and kheer ritual guide.

When is Karwa Chauth in Canada and the USA?
In Canada and the USA, Karwa Chauth falls on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The tithi begins on the 28th in North American time zones. In Toronto and Brampton, the Moon rises at 7:45 PM local time; in New York, at about 7:35 PM. West Coast cities like San Francisco see it later, around 8:08 PM.
What time should sargi be eaten?
Sargi should be finished before sunrise. In Chandigarh, sunrise and the start of the fast are at 6:35 AM on 29 October 2026, so most families eat sargi between 4:00 AM and 5:30 AM. Keep it light and filling: fruits, dry fruits, a little sweet and plenty of water.
Can a pregnant or diabetic woman keep the Karwa Chauth fast?
Yes, but only with her doctor's approval and usually not nirjala. Tradition allows phalahar, milk or water for women who are pregnant, unwell or on medication. In my practice, I always tell such women that the intention of the vrat matters, not physical strain. Please follow medical advice first.
Can I break the fast if the Moon is not visible?
Yes. If clouds hide the Moon, families traditionally complete the puja and arghya at the calculated moonrise time for their city, facing east. The fast is not considered spoiled because of weather. In Chandigarh, that time is 8:12 PM IST on 29 October 2026.
Can I consult Astro Sandeep online before Karwa Chauth?
Yes. I offer 30-minute online consultations for clients in India, Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, in Hindi, English or Punjabi. You only need your date, time and place of birth. I convert foreign birth times correctly before reading the chart. In-person sessions are at my Mohali office.
Does Mangal dosh affect Karwa Chauth?
No. Mangal dosh does not stop anyone from keeping the Karwa Chauth vrat. It is a chart factor studied mainly at kundli milan. Many Manglik charts have cancellation factors, and both partners being Manglik often balances it. If it worries you, get it checked once properly instead of living with fear.
Plan your fast with a calm mind
Karwa Chauth 2026 is on 29 October in India and 28 October in North America, and the best preparation is simple: know your local moonrise, keep the fast your health allows, and pray with a quiet mind.
