Numerology by Date of Birth: How to Find Your Moolank and Bhagyank
By Astro Sandeep, Vedic astrologer, numerologist and Lal Kitab expert with 21+ years of experience
Key points at a glance
- Numerology by date of birth gives you two core numbers: the moolank (birth number) from the day you were born, and the bhagyank (destiny number) from the full date.
- Indian ank jyotish reduces both numbers to a single digit from 1 to 9, and links each digit to a planet: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars.
- The moolank describes your nature and first reactions; the bhagyank describes the direction your life keeps pulling you towards.
- The two numbers should be read together. A friendly pair works smoothly; a tense pair asks for more effort, not fear.
- Numbers show tendencies and direction. For timing, I still check the kundli and the running dasha.
A common message I receive on WhatsApp goes like this: "Guruji, my moolank is 5 but every website says something different about me. Which one is right?" The person has usually read four articles and tried three calculators, and got different answers because some sites add the whole date, some use only the day, and some mix in the name.
The confusion is understandable. Numerology by date of birth is simple arithmetic, but the reading depends on knowing which number you are looking at and what it is meant to answer. In this guide I explain how I calculate the moolank and bhagyank in my numerology consultations, what numbers 1 to 9 mean, which numbers are friendly to each other, and where numerology stops and the kundli has to take over.

What is numerology by date of birth?
Numerology by date of birth is the study of the numbers hidden in your birth date. Your day of birth gives the moolank (birth or psychic number), and the sum of the full date gives the bhagyank (destiny or life path number). Each number from 1 to 9 is ruled by a planet, and that planet colours your nature, strengths and the kind of experiences you attract.
In India this system is called ank jyotish or ank shastra. It borrows its planetary rulers from Vedic astrology, adding Rahu and Ketu for 4 and 7, which is why a numerologist trained in jyotish reads the numbers through the planets rather than as abstract digits. Western (Pythagorean) numerology uses the same arithmetic for the life path number but keeps 11, 22 and 33 as "master numbers". In Indian practice, and in this article, every number is reduced to one digit.

How to calculate your moolank and bhagyank
You need only your date of birth, written exactly as it appears on your birth certificate in DD-MM-YYYY format. Let us use 14 August 1992 (14-08-1992) as the example.
Step 1: Find your moolank (birth number)
Use the day only and add its digits until one digit is left.
- Day = 14, so 1 + 4 = 5. The moolank is 5, ruled by Mercury (Budh).
- If you were born on a single-digit day, that digit is your moolank. Born on the 7th? Your moolank is 7.
- Born on the 29th? 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Your moolank is 2.
Step 2: Find your bhagyank (destiny number)
Add every digit of the full date: day, month and year.
- 14-08-1992 → 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 34
- Reduce: 3 + 4 = 7. The bhagyank is 7, ruled by Ketu.
So this person is a 5 by nature and a 7 by destiny: a quick, talkative, curious mind (Mercury) that life keeps nudging towards research, depth and inner questions (Ketu).

Two mistakes I see often: adding the month into the moolank (the moolank uses the day only), and stopping at a two-digit bhagyank like 34. In Indian numerology, keep adding until a single digit from 1 to 9 is left.
Moolank 1 to 9: ruling planets and meanings
Your moolank is decided by the day of the month you were born. This table shows which dates fall under each number and the planet that rules it.

| Moolank | Born on | Ruling planet | Typical traits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 10, 19, 28 | Sun (Surya) | Leadership, independence |
| 2 | 2, 11, 20, 29 | Moon (Chandra) | Sensitive, caring |
| 3 | 3, 12, 21, 30 | Jupiter (Guru) | Teaching, optimism |
| 4 | 4, 13, 22, 31 | Rahu | Unconventional, practical |
| 5 | 5, 14, 23 | Mercury (Budh) | Quick mind, trade |
| 6 | 6, 15, 24 | Venus (Shukra) | Family, comfort |
| 7 | 7, 16, 25 | Ketu | Inward, research |
| 8 | 8, 17, 26 | Saturn (Shani) | Patience, steady work |
| 9 | 9, 18, 27 | Mars (Mangal) | Courage, energy |
Here is how I describe each number to clients. Read your moolank first, then read the same number again for your bhagyank, keeping in mind that the bhagyank speaks about direction and purpose rather than personality.
- Number 1 (Sun): Natural leaders who want to do things their own way. Good in government, management and any role with authority. The lesson for a 1 is to lead without needing to control everyone around them.
- Number 2 (Moon): Caring, imaginative and quick to sense others' moods. They do well in counselling, hospitality, the arts and any work that needs empathy. Their mind can swing with circumstances, so routine and rest matter.
- Number 3 (Jupiter): Teachers, advisers and guides. People ask them for opinions, even at a young age. Education, law, finance and spiritual work suit them. The caution is over-confidence and giving advice that was not asked for.
- Number 4 (Rahu): Practical and hard-working, yet drawn to unusual ideas and paths. Technology, research, foreign connections and systems work suit them. Life often brings sudden turns, so planning and patience help a 4 more than shortcuts.
- Number 5 (Mercury): Quick thinkers, good talkers and natural traders. Business, sales, media, writing and communication fit them well. They get bored easily, which is a strength in a fast job and a weakness when commitment is needed.
- Number 6 (Venus): Lovers of beauty, comfort and family. Design, fashion, hospitality, the arts and luxury businesses suit them. They build warm homes and long friendships, but must watch overspending and the habit of keeping peace at their own cost.
- Number 7 (Ketu): Thinkers and seekers who prefer depth over noise. Research, healing, spirituality, analysis and technical fields suit them. They often feel misunderstood. Time alone is not a problem for a 7; it is how they recharge.
- Number 8 (Saturn): Serious, patient and dependable, with results that tend to come after real effort. Engineering, law, administration, mining, property and long-term businesses suit them. The early years can feel slow; consistency is what pays them back.
- Number 9 (Mars): Brave, energetic and protective. Defence, police, sports, surgery, real estate and any field that needs courage suit them. Their anger rises fast and settles fast. Channelled well, a 9 gets things done that others only discuss.
Moolank vs bhagyank: what each number tells you
The moolank shows who you are on the inside and how you react; the bhagyank shows the direction life keeps pushing you in and the kind of results you meet over time. I read both, because most of the "my number does not fit me" complaints come from reading only one.
| Question | Moolank (birth number) | Bhagyank (destiny number) |
|---|---|---|
| Calculated from | Day of birth only | Full date of birth |
| What it describes | Nature, instincts, first reactions | Life direction, purpose, the results you meet |
| When it shows most | Early life and day-to-day behaviour | Becomes clearer with age and experience |
| Also called | Mulank, birth number, psychic number | Destiny number, life path number |
Friendly numbers: reading moolank and bhagyank together
Whether your moolank and bhagyank get along depends on whether their ruling planets are natural friends. I use the natural planetary friendships given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; for 4 (Rahu) and 7 (Ketu), which that table does not cover, I follow common practice.

| Number (planet) | Friendly numbers | Tense numbers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (Sun) | 2, 3, 9 | 6, 8 |
| 2 (Moon) | 1, 5 | None by nature; the Moon is not hostile to any planet |
| 3 (Jupiter) | 1, 2, 9 | 5, 6 |
| 4 (Rahu) | 5, 6, 8 | 1, 2 |
| 5 (Mercury) | 1, 6 | 2 |
| 6 (Venus) | 5, 8 | 1, 2 |
| 7 (Ketu) | 5, 6, 8 | 1, 2 |
| 8 (Saturn) | 5, 6 | 1, 2, 9 |
| 9 (Mars) | 1, 2, 3 | 5 |
Numbers not listed for a planet are neutral to it. Planetary friendship is not always two-way: Mercury treats the Moon as an enemy, but the Moon treats Mercury as a friend. So a person with moolank 2 and bhagyank 5 often feels the pull of the destiny number more than the other way round.
In my practice, a tense pair is not bad news. A moolank 1 with a bhagyank 8, for example, usually describes someone who wants quick recognition (Sun) but gets results only through slow, steady effort (Saturn). Once they accept the pace, that same pair builds very solid careers. The number tells you which lesson to expect; it does not decide whether you pass.
An illustrative example
This example is illustrative, built to show the method. It is not a real client.
Take a woman born on 23-11-1990. Her moolank is 2 + 3 = 5 (Mercury). Her bhagyank is 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 26, and 2 + 6 = 8 (Saturn). Mercury and Saturn are natural friends, so this is a supportive pair.
I would read her as a sharp, adaptable communicator (5) whose life rewards structure and long commitment (8). If she asks about switching jobs every year, I would point out that her destiny number does better with staying power: a field where her communication skill builds steadily, such as law, accounts, administration or a family business, suits this pair better than constant change.
Notice what I did not tell her: when to switch. Numbers show the direction. For the year and month, I would open her kundli and check the running Vimshottari dasha and Saturn's transit. That is why I combine numerology with Vedic astrology consultation when the question is about timing.
Myths vs facts about numerology by date of birth
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Some numbers are lucky and some are unlucky. | Every number has strengths and lessons. Number 8 is often called "unlucky", yet many 8s build the most lasting success because they work patiently. |
| Your moolank alone tells your full future. | The moolank shows nature. The bhagyank, your name number and your kundli add the rest. |
| Changing your name will change your destiny overnight. | A name correction can support you when there is a real mismatch, but it is not needed for everyone and it is not magic. |
| Two people with "enemy" numbers cannot marry. | Number friendship shows how two people react. Marriage decisions need full kundli milan, not a single digit. |
| Numerology and astrology are unrelated. | Indian numerology takes its planetary rulers from jyotish, so the two systems support each other. |
Where numerology helps, and where the kundli takes over
Numerology by date of birth is fast and clear for three questions: what your nature is, which direction suits you, and which numbers (names, dates, mobile numbers, business names) sit comfortably with yours. That is why I use it for name checks, business name selection and choosing dates for a shop opening or a property registration.
It is weaker on timing and on specific events. Millions of people share the same moolank and bhagyank, but no two share the exact kundli. For marriage timing, job changes, health concerns or a difficult phase, I read the birth chart as well. If you have not made one yet, make your free kundli and keep it with your numbers. For a marriage question, the free kundli matching tool is a better starting point than comparing two moolanks.
Numerology consultations in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and online
I see clients at my office at Booth No. 50 (basement), Phase 1, Mohali, and online for families across India and abroad. Many of my numerology clients come from Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur and Kharar, usually with a specific question: a business name shortlist, a child's name, or a decision they keep postponing. If you want to know more about the local practice, read about consulting an astrologer in the Chandigarh tricity.
For a reading, send your full name as you write it, your date of birth and a line about your question. If you also want an astrology reading, add your birth time and place.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my numerology number by date of birth?
Add the digits of your day of birth until one digit is left; that is your moolank. Then add every digit of your full date of birth (day, month and year) and reduce it to one digit; that is your bhagyank. For 14-08-1992, the moolank is 5 and the bhagyank is 7.
What is the difference between moolank and bhagyank?
The moolank comes from the day of birth only and describes your nature and reactions. The bhagyank comes from the full date of birth and describes your life direction and the results you meet over time. Reading both together gives a far more accurate picture than either alone.
Which moolank is the luckiest?
No moolank is luckier than another. Each number has its own strengths: 1 for leadership, 3 for guidance, 5 for business, 8 for long-term building and so on. What matters more is whether your moolank, bhagyank and name number support each other.
Is numerology by date of birth accurate?
It is useful for understanding tendencies, strengths and suitable directions. It is not precise about timing or specific events, because many people share the same numbers. I combine it with the kundli when a client needs dates or event-level answers.
Should I change my name according to numerology?
Only if there is a clear mismatch between your name number and your date of birth numbers. Many names already suit their owners. In a numerology consultation I tell you honestly if your current name is fine.
Do I need my birth time for numerology?
No. Numerology by date of birth needs only your date of birth, and a name reading needs your name. Birth time and place are needed only if you also want a Vedic astrology reading from your kundli.
Before you take the next step
Your moolank and bhagyank are a good mirror: they show your nature and the road that suits you. They do not take decisions for you. In my 21 years of practice, people who used their numbers to understand themselves, rather than to fear a "bad" digit, got the most out of them.
If you want your numbers read properly, with your name and kundli alongside, book a consultation with Astro Sandeep, or send a message on WhatsApp to fix a time.
