Business Name Numerology: How to Check If Your Firm's Name Fits

Business Name Numerology: How to Check If Your Firm's Name Fits

By Astro Sandeep, Vedic astrologer and Lal Kitab expert with 21+ years of experience

Key points at a glance

  • Business name numerology adds up the letters of a firm's name, usually with the Chaldean chart, where letters carry values from 1 to 8.
  • The total is reduced to a single name number from 1 to 9, and each number is linked to a ruling planet in Indian ank jyotish (numerology).
  • A name works best when its number is friendly to the owner's moolank (birth-date number) and bhagyank (destiny number).
  • Check the name exactly as it will appear on the GST certificate, signboard and bank account, not a nickname.
  • Numerology can support a good name. It cannot rescue a weak product, poor service or bad accounts.

A sweet shop owner in Kharar once asked me a simple question: "Guruji, we have printed 2,000 boxes with the new name. Is it right or not?" That is the most common way business name numerology reaches me. The name is chosen, the logo is made, and only then does the doubt start.

Checking a firm's name takes about ten minutes once you know your own numbers. If you have not worked those out yet, start with my guide to moolank and bhagyank basics, because the name is always judged against the owner, never in isolation.

In this article I explain the Chaldean method I use, a step-by-step way to check your firm's name, a worked illustrative example, and the honest limits of this system.

What is business name numerology?

Business name numerology is the practice of converting each letter of a firm's name into a number, adding the values and reducing the total to one digit from 1 to 9. That digit, the name number, is linked to a planet. It is then compared with the owner's moolank and bhagyank to judge whether the name supports the owner's natural strengths.

It comes from ank jyotish (Indian numerology), the same system that gives you your moolank from your birth date. In my practice I use the Chaldean letter chart made popular by Cheiro, with the planetary rulers of Indian numerology: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.

The Chaldean letter chart I use for firm names

The Chaldean chart gives every English letter a value from 1 to 8, and the number 9 is not given to any letter. Cheiro treated 9 as a sacred number, so it appears only in totals, never as a letter value.

Number Letters Ruling planet (Indian numerology)
1 A, I, J, Q, Y Sun (Surya)
2 B, K, R Moon (Chandra)
3 C, G, L, S Jupiter (Guru)
4 D, M, T Rahu
5 E, H, N, X Mercury (Budh)
6 U, V, W Venus (Shukra)
7 O, Z Ketu
8 F, P Saturn (Shani)

Many free calculators online use the Pythagorean chart instead, where letters run 1 to 9 in alphabet order (A=1, B=2 … I=9, J=1). The two charts give different totals for the same name. So if one business name numerology website says your firm is a 6 and another says 3, this is usually why. Pick one system and stay with it. I stay with Chaldean because it ties neatly to the planetary rulers used across Indian numerology.

One more practical point. The chart works on English (Latin) letters. A name written in Gurmukhi or Devanagari on your board is read from its registered English spelling, since that is the form used on your GST, bank and website.

How to check your firm's name, step by step

You need two things: your date of birth and the exact spelling of the business name.

  1. Find your moolank. Add the digits of your birth date only. Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5. Your moolank is 5 (Mercury).
  2. Find your bhagyank. Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce to one digit. This shows the longer direction of your work life.
  3. Write the name exactly as registered. Include "Foods", "Traders", "Pvt Ltd" only if the public and the paperwork will actually use it. Drop words that never appear on the board or invoice.
  4. Convert each letter using the Chaldean chart above and total each word separately. Word totals are useful later.
  5. Add the word totals and reduce to a single digit. That is the name number. Keep the two-digit compound total too.
  6. Compare with your moolank and bhagyank. Is the name number's planet a friend, neutral or an enemy of your moolank planet? I use the natural planetary friendships from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra here.
  7. Check the fit with the trade. A name number linked to Venus suits fashion and food better than heavy machinery. This is a secondary check, not a rule.
  8. Say it aloud. If customers cannot spell it or pronounce it, no number will save it.

Steps 1 to 6 are the core of business name numerology. Steps 7 and 8 are where experience and common sense come in.

Which name number suits which kind of business

In business name numerology, each name number carries the traditional nature of its planet, which gives a rough idea of the trades it suits.

Name number Planet Traditional themes Trades it is often linked with
1 Sun Authority, leadership, visibility Consulting, government supply, gold and premium brands
2 Moon Care, public, liquids Dairy, food, hospitality, travel, care services
3 Jupiter Knowledge, advice, growth Coaching, schools, finance advisory, publishing
4 Rahu Technology, foreign links, the unusual IT, import-export, digital services
5 Mercury Trade, speech, numbers Retail, wholesale, media, accounts, e-commerce
6 Venus Beauty, comfort, luxury Fashion, jewellery, salons, wedding services, sweets
7 Ketu Research, detachment, healing Research, wellness, analysis-based software
8 Saturn Labour, structure, patience Construction, manufacturing, real estate, transport
9 Mars Energy, land, machines Property, engineering, fitness, hardware

Table of business name numbers 1 to 9 with ruling planets and suitable trades

Many sites say a business name must total 1, 5 or 6 and that 4 and 8 should always be avoided. I disagree. In my 21 years of practice I have seen transport companies and builders do well under a name number of 8, because Saturn rules labour, heavy vehicles and slow, steady building. The question is never "Is 8 bad?" The question is "Is 8 friendly with this owner's moolank, and does it suit this trade?"

Compound numbers: a second layer

Cheiro also read the two-digit total before reduction. A few he described warmly, such as 19 and 23, and a few with caution, such as 16. I treat compound numbers as a tie-breaker between two spellings that already pass the main check, not as the deciding factor.

A worked example (illustrative)

This example is illustrative, not a real client. It shows the business name numerology method from start to finish.

Harpreet wants to open a sweets and snacks shop in Mohali. She was born on 14 August 1988.

  • Moolank: 1 + 4 = 5 (Mercury)
  • Bhagyank: 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 39 → 3 + 9 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3 (Jupiter)

Her first choice is KESAR FOODS.

  • KESAR = K(2) + E(5) + S(3) + A(1) + R(2) = 13
  • FOODS = F(8) + O(7) + O(7) + D(4) + S(3) = 29
  • Total = 13 + 29 = 42 → 4 + 2 = 6 (Venus)

Venus is a natural friend of Mercury in Parashari astrology, so a name number of 6 sits well with her moolank 5. Venus also suits sweets and food that people buy for celebrations. This name passes.

Her brother suggests dropping the "S" to make it KESAR FOOD. That totals 39, which reduces to 3 (Jupiter). Jupiter matches her bhagyank, but Jupiter treats Mercury as an enemy, so it sits less comfortably with her moolank. I would keep "Kesar Foods".

Notice what we did not do. We did not add extra letters to force a "lucky" total, and we did not change a name that already worked.

Business name numerology myths vs facts

Most of the fear around firm names comes from a few repeated myths.

Myth Fact
A wrong name number will ruin the business. A name number shows a tendency. Product, service, pricing and effort decide most of the result.
Every firm name must total 1, 5 or 6. The right number depends on the owner's moolank, bhagyank and the trade.
Adding extra letters always fixes the number. Odd spellings confuse customers and search engines. Small, natural changes only.
Numerology and kundli give the same answer. They are separate systems. Numerology reads numbers; Vedic astrology reads the birth chart.
An old, established name should be changed if the number is weak. Changing a registered name costs money, paperwork and goodwill. I rarely advise it.
Online calculators all agree. Chaldean and Pythagorean charts give different totals for the same name.

When I advise against changing an existing name

If your firm has run for years under its name, business name numerology should not override the trust the name already carries. That trust matters more than a digit.

Here is my honest view. When a business owner from Panchkula comes to me with falling sales and asks whether to rename the firm, I first look at the timing in the kundli (birth chart). Often the slowdown matches a difficult dasha (planetary period) or Saturn's transit, and it would have come under any name. A full kundli analysis usually tells us more than the name number alone.

I suggest a change only when three things line up: the name number clashes with the owner's moolank, the business is new or about to rebrand anyway, and the owner can manage the legal and printing changes without strain. Even then, it is a choice, not a requirement.

The other limitation is the birth date itself. Some of my clients from villages near Ludhiana have a school-certificate birth date that differs from the real one. Numerology on the wrong date gives the wrong moolank, and every conclusion after that is off. Use the true date if your family knows it.

Safe remedies when the name cannot change

If the name number is not ideal and changing it is not practical, there are simple traditional practices to try. These are acts of faith and discipline, not guarantees.

Numerology (ank jyotish)

  • Use the full name, including the friendly word, on the board and invoice, so the spelling that passed the check is the one people see.
  • Choose an opening or relaunch date whose day number is friendly to your moolank. You can check the tithi and day on the panchang before fixing it.

Vedic (Parashari)

  • Mercury rules trade and accounts. Reciting "Om Budhaya Namah" on Wednesdays is a common Vedic practice for business clarity.
  • A Ganesh puja at the opening or on the first working day of the year is a traditional way to begin.
  • Gemstones such as emerald are suggested only after a personal chart check, never because of a name number alone.

Lal Kitab

  • In Lal Kitab, Mercury is linked with sisters, daughters and young girls. Treating them with respect and giving them small gifts on Wednesdays is a gentle practice many families follow.
  • Feeding green fodder to a cow on Wednesday is a traditional Mercury upay.
  • Lal Kitab does not use name numbers at all. Its remedies work from planet positions in the kundli, so I choose them only after reading the chart. You can read more on my Lal Kitab remedies service.

For business owners in the tricity and NRI families abroad

Business name numerology works the same way in Mohali and in Brampton, because it depends on the spelling and your birth date, not your location.

Most of my name checks come from Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur and Kharar, where new shops, clinics and coaching centres open every month. Owners from Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Ambala also send names before registering. If you prefer to sit across the table, in-person sessions are at my Mohali office, and you can read more about how I work in the tricity astrologer guide.

NRI families often ask me about trucking firms in Brampton, restaurants in Surrey, or businesses in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. An online consultation works just as well. For numerology, the date of birth is used as it appears in your records. When we also read the kundli, I convert a birth time recorded abroad to the correct time zone so the chart is accurate. Details are on the consultation page for clients worldwide.

One NRI-specific point: names registered in Canada or the USA often add "Inc." or "LLC". Check the name as customers will see it on the sign and the website, and check the legal version separately if partners insist.

Frequently asked questions

Which numerology chart is best for a business name?

The Chaldean chart is the one I use for business name numerology. It gives letters values from 1 to 8 and links neatly with the planetary rulers of Indian numerology. The Pythagorean chart is also common, but it gives different totals, so do not mix the two when comparing names.

Should the business name number match my moolank?

It should be friendly to your moolank, not necessarily the same number. A name number whose planet is a natural friend of your moolank planet works well. For example, a moolank 5 (Mercury) owner usually does well with a name number of 6 (Venus) or 1 (Sun).

Is name number 8 bad for a business?

No, name number 8 is not bad by itself. Saturn rules labour, construction and transport, so it can suit those trades. It becomes a concern mainly when the owner's moolank is 1, 2 or 9, because in Parashari astrology Saturn treats the Sun, Moon and Mars as enemies.

Do I include "Pvt Ltd" or "Traders" in the calculation?

Include a word only if it is part of the name people will actually use. If "Traders" appears on your board, invoices and website, include it. If "Pvt Ltd" appears only on legal documents, I check the trading name first and the legal name as a second view.

Can changing the business name increase profit?

No numerologist can promise more profit from a name change. A well-matched name supports the owner's strengths and is easier to remember, but sales still depend on product, service, location and timing. I treat a name change as a small adjustment, never as a solution on its own.

Can partners with different moolanks share one business name?

Yes, partners can share one name. I check the name against each partner's moolank and look for a number that is friendly or neutral to all of them. If that is not possible, I give more weight to the partner who runs the daily business.

Can I get my business name checked online?

Yes, an online consultation works well for name checks. Share your full date of birth, the exact spelling options and your trade. In-person sessions are available at the Mohali office for owners in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, and online sessions suit NRI clients in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Getting your firm's name right

Business name numerology is most useful before you print the boards, not after. Work out your moolank, total the name with the Chaldean chart, check the planetary friendship and say the name aloud. If it passes, keep it and put your energy into the work.

If you want a second opinion on two or three name options, I check them against your birth date and, if you wish, your kundli as well. You can book a consultation with Astro Sandeep for a 30-minute personal session. If you are still exploring, make your free kundli first to see where Mercury and the 10th house sit in your chart, or message me on WhatsApp.
