Manglik Dosha: How to Check It, When It Cancels and Safe Remedies
By Astro Sandeep, Vedic astrologer and Lal Kitab expert with 21+ years of experience
Key points at a glance
- Manglik dosha (Mangal dosh) is formed when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart.
- Many astrologers check Mars from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, so a chart can be "Manglik" in one method and not in another.
- The dosha is commonly treated as cancelled when Mars is in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, when Jupiter aspects Mars, or when both partners carry it.
- A Manglik person can have a happy marriage with a non-Manglik partner when the rest of both kundlis support the match.
- Remedies are traditional acts of faith; they work best after a personal chart check, and none can guarantee an outcome.
The call usually comes on a Sunday evening. A family in Ludhiana has liked a rishta (marriage proposal), the photos are approved, the families have spoken twice, and then the pandit says one word: Manglik. Everything stops. The mother is worried, the boy is confused, and someone has already read online that the marriage will fail.
In my 21 years of practice I have seen more good matches dropped over manglik dosha than over any other single factor. This guide explains how the dosha is checked, the cancellation rules most families never hear about, and remedies that are safe. If you are at the matching stage, read it alongside my guide to Kundli Milan and the 36 gunas, because Mars is only one part of compatibility.

What is manglik dosha?
Manglik dosha is a condition in Vedic astrology where Mars (Mangal) occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the kundli (birth chart). Because these houses relate to self, family, home, spouse, married life and the bed, an unbalanced Mars here is traditionally linked to friction or delay in marriage, unless cancellation rules apply.
It is also called Mangal dosh, Kuja dosha or Bhaum dosha. "Dosha" means an imbalance, not a curse.
Why Mars in these six houses?
Mars is the planet of energy, courage and quick action, and in these six houses that energy touches the marriage directly.
- 1st house (self): a strong-willed, quick-tempered nature that can dominate a partner.
- 2nd house (family and speech): sharp words at home, friction with in-laws. Some North Indian traditions leave this house out.
- 4th house (home and peace): restlessness in the house, disputes over property.
- 7th house (spouse): direct heat in the marriage itself, arguments, ego clashes.
- 8th house (longevity of marriage, in-laws): sudden ups and downs, health worries for the couple.
- 12th house (bed comforts, expenses): strain in intimacy, high spending, distance.
Mars in the 7th or 8th is usually read as the strongest form; the 2nd or 12th as the mildest. Many sites skip this: Mars also aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th houses from wherever it sits (a rule from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra). So a 1st-house Mars throws its aspect straight onto the 7th house of marriage.

How to check manglik dosha in your kundli: step by step
You can check Mangal dosh yourself in about ten minutes if you have an accurate birth time. These are the steps I follow in my own consultations.
- Make your chart. Enter your date, exact time and place of birth in the free kundli generator.
- Find Mars from the Lagna. Count the house Mars occupies from the ascendant (house 1). If it falls in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, note it.
- Repeat from the Moon. Treat the Moon's sign as house 1 and count again.
- Repeat from Venus. Venus is the karaka (significator) of marriage, so many astrologers check Mars from Venus too.
- Check the sign and degree of Mars. Aries, Scorpio (own signs) or Capricorn (exaltation) change the reading a lot.
- Look for Jupiter's aspect or a benefic conjunction. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th from itself. If it touches Mars, the dosha softens.
- Check the Navamsa (D9) chart. Marriage is confirmed in the D9. A Mars that is troublesome in D1 but well placed in D9 behaves differently.
- Compare with the partner's chart. Only now does the question "is this a problem?" make sense.
If Mars shows up from all three points (Lagna, Moon, Venus) with no cancellation, I call it a strong Manglik. If it shows from only one, I call it partial. Many online calculators print "Manglik: Yes" after step 2 alone. That is where most of the panic starts.

When does manglik dosha cancel?
Manglik dosha is commonly treated as cancelled or weakened when Mars is strong in its own or exalted sign, when a benefic like Jupiter influences it, or when both partners carry a similar Mars. These rules come from later compilations and regional practice rather than one neat chapter in the classical texts, so astrologers apply them with judgement.
| Condition | Effect on the dosha | What I check |
|---|---|---|
| Mars in Aries or Scorpio (own sign) | Usually cancelled or much weaker | Sign of Mars in D1 and D9 |
| Mars in Capricorn (exalted) | Usually cancelled or much weaker | Degree and house of Mars |
| Jupiter aspects or joins Mars | Softened | Jupiter's 5th, 7th, 9th aspect |
| Venus or a well-placed Mercury with Mars | Softened | Conjunction within the same sign |
| Both partners Manglik | Treated as balanced | Strength of Mars in each chart |
| Mars in late degrees of a sign (past 28°) | Weaker results in some traditions | Exact longitude |
| Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, or in the 12th in Taurus or Libra (regional rules) | Often treated as cancelled | Which tradition the family follows |
| Strong 7th lord and Venus | Practical relief even without a formal rule | Overall marriage houses |
Cancellation lists differ slightly between texts and regions, so you will find small variations online. And a "cancelled" Mars still gives drive, directness and sometimes a short fuse. Cancellation means the marriage risk is not raised. It does not mean the person has no temper.

Manglik marriage with a non-Manglik partner: is it possible?
Yes, a Manglik can marry a non-Manglik when the overall charts are compatible and the dosha is mild or cancelled. I see such couples happily married every month.
The old advice was that a Manglik must marry only a Manglik. That rule still has a place when Mars is strong and uncancelled; then I look for balancing Mars or Saturn in the other chart (houses 1, 4, 7, 8, 12), or a strong Jupiter. Rejecting every non-Manglik rishta closes many good doors.
What I weigh instead:
- The strength of Mars in both charts, not just its house.
- The 7th house, 7th lord and Venus in both D1 and D9.
- The running dasha at the time of marriage. A Mars or Rahu mahadasha needs more care than a Jupiter one.
- Guna milan score, Nadi and Bhakoot.
Run a first check with the free kundli matching tool, then have the details read before the families decide.
Myths vs facts about Mangal dosh
Most of the fear around Mangal dosh comes from half-remembered rules. Here are the ones I correct most often.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| A Manglik's spouse will die. | No reliable text supports this as a fixed outcome. It is the most harmful myth in Indian matchmaking. |
| Manglik dosha ends at 28. | Mars matures around 28 in some traditions, which can soften its heat. The placement in the chart does not disappear. |
| One "Yes" on a website means you are Manglik. | Most calculators check only from the Lagna. Moon, Venus, sign and aspects must be seen too. |
| Kumbh vivah (symbolic marriage) is compulsory. | It is a traditional ritual some families choose. It is not required, and it is never a guarantee. |
| Two Mangliks always make a perfect match. | Both being Manglik balances Mars. The rest of the match still has to work. |
| Manglik means bad nature. | Mars gives courage, discipline and drive. Many Mangliks are excellent partners, officers, surgeons and athletes. |

Safe remedies for manglik dosha
The safest remedies for manglik dosha are simple, regular, and chosen after your chart is read. I treat all of these as traditional practices and acts of faith; they support effort between partners and cannot guarantee an outcome.
Vedic (Parashari) remedies
- Hanuman Chalisa or the Mangal beej mantra on Tuesdays. "Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" is the traditional mantra.
- Daan (charity) on Tuesdays: red lentils (masoor dal) or jaggery to someone in need.
- Fasting on Tuesday, only if your health allows. Check with your doctor if you have a medical condition.
- Coral (moonga). I suggest this only after a personal chart check, because in some lagnas Mars is a functional malefic and coral can make matters worse.
- Kumbh vivah or Vishnu vivah before marriage, if the family follows that tradition. I explain it as a ritual of faith, not a fix.
Lal Kitab remedies
The Lal Kitab (1952 edition) reads Mars as either "Mangal Nek" (helpful) or "Mangal Bad" (troubled), and the remedy depends on which one you have.
- Floating a few copper coins or a little red lentil in flowing water, done respectfully.
- Keeping a solid silver item with you, a traditional Lal Kitab measure for Mars in some houses.
- Sharing sweets made of jaggery with family on Tuesdays, which also keeps the house warm.
- Avoiding the "Mangal Bad" behaviours the book warns about: anger at siblings, false promises about property, harsh speech at home.
Lal Kitab upay are house-specific. A remedy for Mars in the 8th can be wrong for Mars in the 4th, so I never hand out one list to everyone.
Book a Lal Kitab consultation for a Mars remedy that fits your house placement
I will not suggest anything that harms an animal, wastes food, or asks you to spend large sums out of fear. If someone says the marriage will fail unless you pay for an expensive puja today, take a second opinion.
An illustrative example
This example is illustrative and not a real client.
Take a girl from Mohali with Aries lagna and Mars in the 1st house. A calculator calls her "high Manglik", and the boy's family in Brampton wants to step back.
On a full reading, Mars is in Aries, its own sign, so the standard cancellation applies. Jupiter in the 5th aspects the 1st house. And in her Navamsa, the 7th lord is well placed. The boy's chart has Saturn in the 7th, which many astrologers treat as balancing Mars. The guna score is 26 with no Nadi dosha.
My reading here: Mars gives her a strong, direct nature, so the couple should agree early on how decisions are made. The marriage carries no raised Manglik risk. A Tuesday Hanuman Chalisa is enough if the family wants a remedy.
Manglik dosha consultation in Chandigarh, Mohali and for NRI families
You can have your Manglik status checked in person at my Mohali office or online, and both give the same depth of reading. I see families from Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur and Kharar at Booth No. 50 (basement), Phase 1, Mohali, and many come from Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala and Shimla for the day. Read more about in-person sessions in the Chandigarh tricity.
For NRI families in Brampton, Surrey, Toronto, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, the online consultation works just as well. One technical point matters here. If the boy or girl was born abroad, the birth time must be calculated in that city's local time zone, including daylight saving if it applied on that date. A one-hour error can move Mars from the 7th to the 8th house, or out of the Manglik houses entirely.
If marriage timing is the bigger worry, my article on what your kundli says about when you will get married covers the dashas and transits I look at.
Honest limits of a Manglik reading
A Manglik reading is only as good as the birth time behind it, and it never decides a marriage on its own. If your birth time is a guess ("around evening"), the house of Mars can be wrong, and I will tell you so.
Remedies cannot replace effort either. Two people who respect each other and talk through anger will manage a strong Mars. Two who don't will struggle with a perfect chart. For the full chart picture beyond Mars, see how I approach a complete kundli analysis, and if your birth time is uncertain, rectification from past events is part of a one-to-one Vedic astrology consultation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am Manglik?
You are Manglik if Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your kundli. Count Mars from the Lagna, Moon and Venus, then check its sign and Jupiter's aspect. A calculator gives a first answer; a reading confirms whether it is strong, partial or cancelled.
Does manglik dosha really cancel after 28?
Not as a fixed rule. Some traditions say Mars matures around age 28, so its heat may feel milder after that. The placement in your birth chart does not change, though. I judge the dosha from Mars's sign, aspects and the running dasha, not from age alone, and I don't advise families to wait until 28 just for this reason.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Yes, when the overall match supports it. If Mars is cancelled or mild, a non-Manglik partner is fine. If Mars is strong and uncancelled, I look for balancing Mars, Saturn or Jupiter in the other chart, and check the 7th house, Venus and the Navamsa of both before advising the families.
What is partial Manglik (anshik Manglik)?
Partial Manglik means Mars falls in a Manglik house from only one reference point, such as the Moon, but not from the Lagna or Venus. It can also mean the dosha is present but softened by a cancellation rule. Partial Manglik usually needs no special matching, though I still check the partner's 7th house.
Which remedy is best for Mangal dosh?
There is no single best remedy for every chart. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays and giving red lentils in charity are safe for almost anyone. Coral, Lal Kitab upay and kumbh vivah should be chosen only after a personal chart check, because the right step depends on the house and sign of Mars.
Can I get my manglik dosha checked online from Canada or the USA?
Yes. Share your date, exact time and place of birth when you book, and I convert the time correctly for the city you were born in, including daylight saving. The session is the same 30-minute personal reading as in my Mohali office, in Hindi, English or Punjabi.
Before you say no to a rishta over manglik dosha
Manglik dosha is a real factor in kundli matching, but it is one factor, and in many charts it is cancelled or mild. Check Mars from three points, read the Navamsa and compare both charts before anyone decides.
